This is a test

Next Tuesday, June 5th, a little after 6pm EDT, Venus is going to pass in front of the sun from our line of sight. If you haven’t heard this, no worries. By the weekend, it should be all over the news.

I’ll be heading to a high spot out west with a good chance for clear steady skies. I’ve been getting my equipment together for travel, and testing my new camera so I (hopefully) don’t mess up the photo op. This image of the sun on Memorial day is made using a cool new video camera with a really big sensor. You can get the full sense of how big from this original image. 

There was a transit of Venus eight years ago. After next week, it won’t happen again for more than a century. So find a good high spot with a view of the northwest horizon and bring some eclipse glasses - or a friend with a safely filtered solar telescope. It’s a very cool sight you don’t want to miss.
